Lying on Your Resume, is a Bad Idea or a good idea?


If you’ve been called for an interview, then the chances are quite high that the employers have already decided to hire you based on the information furnished in your resume. What if you lied by presenting inaccurate information?

As per a recent estimate, people lie while submitting job applications. They make changes in their employment dates to hide the gaps that exist in their employment. They even claim to possess experiences which do not live up to the scrutiny. Many people claim to have finished degrees and training which they only commenced and never completed. Many people falsify military service, salary history and job titles.

People resort to lying because they are scared that they wouldn’t be hired. Lying on resume about qualifications would only harm people in the long run. You would end up getting fired as soon as your lying is figured out. Few companies verify the employment details in order to figure out whether you are lying or not. So what can you do if you’ve lied on your resume?

The safest thing to do is to withdraw your application and can inform that you have reconsidered your application process. They would think that you’ve obtained another offer or maybe you aren’t finding the pay right. This seems to be the best thing to do before you end up getting caught. You can as well make revisions in your resume and provide it to the manager who is in charge of hiring. You can tell them that you had to make corrections as you found few errors in your resume. This wouldn’t be of any use if you’ve made false job claims or any claims pertaining to performance.

You can explain the reason for your gaps or sudden departures instead of making false claims. It is best to think before embellishing your resume with lies. You may end up getting the job, but on the bad side you may end up getting fired once your information has been detected to be false. You lie would come back and bite you. You would be given notice to resign right away even if you’ve served the company well for a couple of months or years. An MIT dean had to resign after 28 years of service once audits were done by the university. She claimed to have degrees from three schools which weren’t true.

These days lying can prove out to be expensive as companies conduct scrutiny of applications. Background checks are done to figure out any inconsistency in the resume. Instead, the applicants can work to enhance their credentials which would land them a decent job. If the application you’re applying for requires you to possess a college degree, then you can try passing the degree by applying online. There are several options present today to complete the degree and to acquire the skills that are in much demand. Use the power of networking where you can overcome the missing qualifications of skills by impressing a decision maker who has the potential to persuade the company in taking a chance. Referrals play a key role in today’s job hunt. You need to spend some time in establishing contacts. You need to be in a position to explain why you are the best to a potential employer.

Lying is not the solution to land a good paying job. There is always a risk associated with lying. If your truth is discovered then you will be fired out in no time. You will always have to live in the fear of getting caught. The chances are quite high that you may not be able to answer questions pertaining to the skill you lied. Getting caught would land you in embarrassing situations. This will pose more hurdles in finding a new job. This will not just impact you financially but will as well damage your reputation. The choice is all yours!
